🍽️ Li Bamboo Rice
Introduction:
Li ethnic rice roasted in bamboo tubes.
Detailed Introduction:
Li Bamboo Rice is a traditional staple of the Li people in the mountainous area around Dongfang, Hainan. The Li use local shanlan glutinous rice, pack it into a fresh bamboo tube with a measured amount of water, seal the opening with banana leaf, and roast it slowly over charcoal. Bamboo aroma and rice aroma interpenetrate in the heat; when the tube is split open, the rice carries a layer of fragrant, slightly charred bamboo film, soft and sticky with a clean bamboo scent. Traditionally it was taken as dry provisions when Li people worked deep in the hills or traveled; today it appears as a flavored staple in scenic-area restaurants. It can be eaten plain or roasted with pieces of meat and salt inside. It is both the wisdom of Li mountain life and a must-try wild-mountain flavor for visitors to Hainan's ethnic villages.
