Gannan navel oranges are a famous specialty of Ganzhou, Jiangxi. The hilly southern Jiangxi climate, ample rainfall and red-yellow soils yield large, thin-skinned, seedless oranges with bright juicy flesh, high sweetness and balanced tartness. Ripening in autumn and winter, they release a bright aroma when peeled and are eaten fresh or juiced. In Ganzhou households, a bag of navel oranges sits on the table through winter, eaten between meals or squeezed into breakfast juice, and the first autumn boxes are often given to relatives as soon as they ripen. Orchards spread across Ganzhou's counties, making the orange a local agricultural pillar and a seasonal gift. Travelers often carry boxes home in autumn and winter; together with other regional products, it is one of the flavors Ganzhou people miss most away from home.
