🍽️ Heyuan Radish Cake

📍 Province: Guangdong 🏙️ City: Heyuan
Introduction:
Radish glutinous cake, Hakka winter snack.
Detailed Introduction:
Heyuan Radish Cake is a traditional winter snack of the Hakka region in Heyuan, Guangdong, and a savory steamed item in the Hakka ban family. White radish is grated, lightly stir-fried to shed water, mixed with cured pork dice, shiitake, dried shrimp and scallion, then combined with rice and glutinous rice flours into a thick batter and steamed in a shallow tray. The cake comes out pale yellow, soft yet springy, with visible radish shreds and filling inside. Each bite is fresh, faintly pungent radish balanced by the savor of cured meat and mushroom, warm and comforting. In Heyuan's cool mountain winters, every household makes it as a seasonal and Lunar New Year food. It is eaten steamed whole or sliced and pan-fried until crisp at the edges. Together with Meizhou noodles and Huizhou mugwort ban, it belongs to the Hakka rice-cake lineage, showing how Hakka home cooking uses seasonal radish and rice flour to warm and nourish.
